This topic is not easy but it is possible to give a simple example of cis and trans. Two substances with the same formula and similar structure can be quite different, regarding physical properties such as boiling point.
These two stereoisomers differ according to cis, where two of the same molecules are on the same side of the double bond; and, trans where the same molecules are on opposite sides.
