Climate Change and Feedback: What does it mean?

Climate change is not defined; any connection to state space, and such multidimensional analysis would be just gobbledygook. Feedback is considered to be a change from one equilibrium position to the next. A phase-locked loop (PLL) tracks signals in deep space which have doppler shifted velocities comparable to the speed of light. Even though the PLL is a simple feedback circuit, it has been intensely researched since the 1930's. Here is a block diagram of a PLL frequency synthesizer.

The loop is locked on to a small error voltage, hence the term phase lock. When the circuit is disturbed  it frequency modulates before it settles down.

(1) FM = sin(fc + m (sin(fm)))

The sidebands (noise) are calculated with Bessel functions; indeed, the purpose of a PLL is to dig signals out of the background noise.

The voice, on the other hand, is a feedback and control system that makes noise; for example:

(2) FM? = sin( sin(fc) + sawtooth_wave (sin(fm)))

Oh, what about ‘climate change’? There are, in fact, three defined states.

a. Great Ice Age

b. In between

c. Age of the dinosaurs.

(a) and (b) are like the sawtooth wave in equation (2). The ice builds up over a period of 100,000 years and collapses quickly in a few thousand years.

(c) is due to the position of Antarctica. There is no ice cap when the continent is in the Pacific, away from the South Pole. In this case there is no sawtooth wave and, by analogy, no error voltage.
